Osvaldo Guzman Ayala
Founder & Lead Engineer, Base64 Marketing & AI Consulting
I've been building things since I was 15 — small freelance websites, graphics for local YouTube channels, whatever a friend or family member needed. That habit of just figuring it out turned into a career, and eventually into Base64.
I studied Computer Science & Digital Media Design at Lake Forest College, and kept freelancing the whole way through — landing my first big client, a full custom e-commerce build, while I was still a student. An internship at a creative agency had me shipping large-scale event microsites on Vue, and after graduating I spent years as a full-stack developer and designer at a marketing agency, building sites for everyone from home inspectors to industrial chemical companies.
From there I spent over five years at a large Chicago non-profit serving individual investors — with a detour to a California startup in between before I came back home. Somewhere in those years, I started taking on consulting work for AI tech startups outside of my day job, building custom AI software for the dental industry. That was the first time I saw, up close, how much leverage AI could give a small, local business.
I come from a family of small business owners, so none of this was abstract to me. I've watched what it costs when a business is running on manual systems — the missed calls, the late nights, the growth that stalls out not from lack of demand but from lack of time.
I still hold a full-time engineering role at my primary employer — I'm not going anywhere, and I want to be upfront about that. Base64 is the second full commitment I've built alongside it, not a side hustle I squeeze in when I have a spare hour. I hold myself to the same standard on both: full-stack engineering, design, and AI automation, applied directly to Chicago's local service businesses.
The path here
Age 15
First freelance clients
Started designing websites, YouTube graphics, and basic HTML sites for friends, family, and word-of-mouth clients — self-taught, driven mostly by curiosity.
Age 18
Computer Science, Lake Forest College, IL
Started a B.S. in Computer Science & Digital Media Design. Freelance work grew alongside it, capped by landing my first big client: a custom full e-commerce build.
During college
Agency internship, Vue stack
Interned as a developer at a creative digital agency, building large-scale microsites for major music festivals and live events on a Vue front-end.
After graduating
Marketing agency, developer & designer
Full-stack developer and designer at a marketing agency on a PHP + Craft CMS stack, serving a wide range of clients — from home inspectors to industrial chemical companies.
The following ~5+ years
Chicago non-profit, with a detour
Joined a large Chicago non-profit serving individual investors, where I spent the bulk of the next five-plus years — with a stretch in between at a California startup before coming back to Chicago.
Alongside my day job
AI consulting, dental space
Started consulting for AI tech startups outside of my primary role, building custom AI software for the dental industry — the work that pulled me toward founding something of my own.
2026 — present
Founder, Base64
Built and launched Base64 Marketing & AI Consulting as a second full commitment alongside my primary engineering role, bringing that same engineering depth to Chicago's local service businesses.
